Trigger Warning

Man Out of Work,
Sick, Ends His Life

While his wife, Elizabeth, was preparing dinner last night, Charles Brown stepped into the bathroom of his home, 3328A Twenty-fourth street, and cut his throat. Mrs. Brown heard the noise of the falling body, and rushing to the bathroom, discovered her husband in the bathtub dead. Brown was a grocery clerk and had been out of employment for four months. This with illness, had made him despondent.

Latest Research & Possible Leads • McKee's @ Holy Cross

With my trusty guide in hand, I traipsed out to Holy Cross Cemetery in Colma to search for the physical location of the McKee family grave markers… only to find another name I've never seen affiliated with the family… engraved below the family name.

McMullin?
Jessie shares the McKee headstone and plot.showing up in Holy Cross indexes, as a McMullen. [December 30, 1912] Still to be unraveled: Her brother, Rev. Orison McMullen, assigned to St. Mary’s church, arranged to have her included in the McKee plot. Curious about that negotiation, since St. Mary’s was not the McKee’s home church (St. James), although they were Paulists. He was also near the end of his 5 year assignment in San Francisco and their family lived back East.

Did the McKees have a connection to either of the siblings? Was it a donation or was the payment a headstone to be shared? Was her tuberculosis death a consideration for burial or long-distance transport? Was the availability of a grave and sharing with Eva, a spinster?

Paulist's Sister Yields to Death
Miss Jessie McMullen Dies After Long Illness With Dread Tuberculosis.
Miss Jessie McMullen, who has been making her home in this city with Mr. and Mrs. Darcy Ridge of Boston Ravine since last June, died yesterday after a protracted illness with dread tuberculosis. Miss. McMullen was born in New' York State and was about 29 years of age. Her parents died when she was quite young and several months ago she came west to join her brother, Rev. Orrinson AleMullen, a Paulist father of San Francisco, who has been at her bedside for several days and will accompany the remains to San Francisco today. Miss McMullen was of a sweet type of womanhood, intelligent and winsome, and during her stay here made numerous acquaintances. Immediately upon the arrival of the remains in Sail Francisco they will be taken to Paulist church, where services will be held.

Rev. Orison McMullen
Brother to Jessie

Findagrave.com lists a Jessie McMullin sharing the McKee family plot. June '23:A clever friend found records to verify her death and public existence in newspaper obituaries… as well as a brother/Paulist father
